Logix Milk Annual Report 2015
This is the 2015/16 Logix Milk Annual Report which releases phenotypic and genetic information on cows participating in Logix Milk Recording and Genetic Evaluation, for the South African Ayrshire, Holstein and Jersey dairy breeds.
Phenotypic information is based on measurements from lactations that were completed during the 2015 lactation year.
SA Stud Book Annual Report 2015
Information has been obtained from Logix as on 03/01/2016. SA Stud Book serves a variety of species and breed societies within these species, including beef and dairy cattle, small stock, pigs, horses, ostriches, game and dogs, of which most of presented in this report. SA Stud Book is a registered registering organisation aiding farmers with animal registration, recording, general consultations, on-farm technical advice and genetic evaluations.
SA Stud Breeder
SA Stud Breeder is a service that SA Stud Book offers to all its members and applicable livestock associations in the livestock industry. The publication provides semi-scientific and scientific information and articles that apply to stud breeders in the livestock industry and is available for free.
Stud Book Focus
The genetic evaluation of a breed involves estimating its
breeding values by means of internationally accepted
methods. It also includes the estimation of hereditability
and genetic correlations between traits.
Breeding values are the most accurate tool for selecting animals. SA Stud Book uses best linear unbiased prediction
(BLUP) methodology, a method used across the world to estimate breeding values in beef and dairy cattle, sheep,
goats and pigs.
The first Studbreeders’ Manual saw the light in 2007 and is compiled by experts in die livestock industry of South Africa. The second addition was published in 2015. The manual is recommended as a textbook at several universities in South Africa.
Production Recording Booklet
This booklet was published for the second time in 2015 and is a handy tool to facilitate the recording of data in the field. The book is particularly applicable for the recording of production data of small stock and beef cattle.
SA Livestock Breeding
In 1998, SA Stud Book published the first issue of a glossy periodical, South African Livestock Breeding The second edition of the book was honoured with a SAPPI Pica Award for Excellence.
